Kevin Heathwood, Band Director
Kevin Heathwood graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and is currently working toward his Masters Degree in Music Education from Boston University.
In January 2011, Mr. Heathwood was appointed as the band director of Middle School 180. In his short time as director of bands at MS 180, the program launched its first concert band program in nearly 20 years, and the band program has now grown to encompass two concert bands and a jazz ensemble. Mr. Heathwood also teaches band at PS 43 in the South Bronx, another partner school with Education Through Music.
Prior to his appointment at Middle School 180, Mr. Heathwood taught at Hampton Bays Middle School, on Long Island, where he instructed three concert bands, a jazz ensemble, solo and ensemble preparations, and general music. Mr. Heathwood also taught overseas at Westlake Boys High School in Auckland New Zealand. While at Westlake he assisted with daily music theory and history classes, the Concert Band, the Symphony Orchestra, and its male choir: Voicemale.
Mr. Heathwood holds professional memberships in the National Association for Music Educators, the New York State School Music Association, and the International Trumpet Guild. He is an active performer and plays at shows throughout the city and is also the drum sergeant for the Róisín Dubh Irish Pipe Band, a Grade 3 pipe band based out
of AOH Div. 7 in East Islip, NY.
